Having strong technical and soft skills are essential to succeeding as a consultant. MCG helps build both.

technical skills

As a consultant, you’ll be exposed to a variety of software during different projects and in different verticals. The most common technical skills that current consultants utilize are data analysis, data manipulation, and Microsoft Suite. Read more on what classes to take to technically improve at Classes to Take. We also recommend joining and/or reading about clubs like Information Systems Club (ISC) and the Data Science and Analytics Club to demonstrate resume interest in technically improving.

soft skills

Soft skills are the interpersonal, communication, and leadership abilities that help consultants build rapport with clients, facilitate collaboration, and manage relationships to achieve successful outcomes.

interrogative mindset

Being able to do your own research and learn how to ask good questions is an important skill for consultants, especially recent graduates. You may be placed on a project in an unfamiliar industry and will have to utilize your research skills to develop an understanding of the client’s situation and be able to ask insightful questions to key into the issue at hand.

presentation and communication skills

Being able to present and communicate effectively is imperative to being a consultant. Storytelling is huge for consultants as they explain the reasoning and process behind any recommendations presented to a client.

Getting involved in case competitions and visiting the on-campus speaking center in C4 are two ways to further develop these skills.

executive functioning

Like any working professional, consultants must have strong executive functioning skills, specifically time management and people organization.

Professional and Peer Success Coaches are great resources to receive  executive functioning coaching. You can make an appointment and learn more right here.

empathy

In the consulting world, empathy is the ability of consultants to understand and connect with clients at a deeper level. Empathy empowers consultants to see the client’s perspective which leads to effectively tailoring solutions accordingly, leading to better outcomes overall.
