Our History

The Management Consulting Group was originally formed as the Binghamton Consulting Group (BCG) during the summer of 2014. The club officially launched in September 2014 and quickly grew to become one of the top professional development organizations within the Binghamton University School of Management.

During the club’s inaugural year, President Dan Malinovsky guided the organization, hosting two case competitions, numerous professional development workshops and facilitating some networking calls and events. The club’s first year was a tremendous success, and during the winter of 2015, the organization rebranded to the Management Consulting Group (MCG).

During the 2017 Spring Semester, MCG ran the Consulting Development Program (CDP) to discover and help the thriving consulting talent at Binghamton University. The program is student-run and provides mentorship to participants, who learn from the experience of senior students. CDP members also participated in a case competition and had the opportunity to present to and network with professionals.

As MCG continues expanding, the board challenges itself to take on new initiatives, in addition to growing its existing programs. In Fall 2018, the Consulting Engagement Program (CEP) was launched. The goal of CEP is to gain real-world consulting experience by taking on business clients from the local community. The inaugural engagement took place at the local Floyd L Maines Arena, where the CEP team developed strategies to increase event attendance and arena revenue.

The 2018-2019 school year has seen more growth, with another Binghamton University case competition record of 71 teams and more than 300 participants in the annual EY TechX Case Competition. CEP worked with Binghamton Printing Center to rebrand as Binghamton Print Solutions, and increase their revenue and customer base. In Spring 2019, MCG continued to run CDP, but also introduced the Interview Academy, a 3-day series on the different types of consulting interviews.

In Spring 2020, MCG adapted to the impacts of COVID-19 and hosted its first virtual capstone case competition through the Consulting Development Program. MCG has also seen a smooth transition into a virtual fall semester for the 2020-21 school year. The EY TechX Case Competition had its highest participation yet at 74 teams. The Consulting Engagement Program has partnered with 180 Degrees Consulting, an international organization that is focused on nonprofit clients. This partnership allows the CEP team to have larger access to resources in the consulting field, an expanded network, and the ability to work under a recognized name.

Today, MCG at Binghamton University is poised for success in the future and aims to be the top professional development organization at Binghamton University.
