180 Degrees Consulting

180 Degrees Consulting is the world’s largest consultancy for non-profit and socially minded organizations. A branch of 180 Degrees Consulting allows Binghamton students to connect with and learn from other branches at elite universities, have access to vast consulting resources, increase their community impact, and work under a professional and recognized name. 180 Degrees Consulting is a year-long program in which Binghamton students in the Management Consulting Group provide consulting services to local organizations. The goal of the program is to give students the opportunity to create strategic recommendations for clients that have the potential to create tangible impact. Through producing deliverables, attending client meetings, and solving complex problems, students gain unique exposure to what a career in consulting may entail.

This upcoming academic year, 180 Degrees Binghamton is excited to work with the YWCA, Kopernik Observatory, as well as other engagements to be announced. This is the first ever year the branch will be consulting for solely non-profit organizations.

Spring 2023 kopernik observatory engagement

In the spring of 2023, a 180DC team led by George Spring worked with Kopernik Observatory, a science center in Vestal, NY close to the university campus. Throughout the semester, the team worked closely with observatory leadership to complete a competitor analysis on other similar science centers, both on a local and international scale. The team also helped streamline communication between executives and their interns, as well as develop new channels of intern recruitment from local educational institutions. We are excited to work with Kopernik Observatory further this upcoming academic year!

2022-2023 YWCA ENGAGEMENT

The YWCA is a national non-profit organization providing services ranging from child care, crisis hotlines, safe housing and much more. The Binghamton YWCA branch required assistance with fundraising and community outreach, leading to expansive fundraising efforts spearheaded by our consultants. Over the course of the year, multiple fundraisers were held at local restaurants, increasing community outreach and developing crucial business relationships for the future. We are excited to continue working with YWCA Binghamton for the 2023-2024 academic year and look forward to helping solidify their presence within the local area.

2020-2022 ENHANCE VR ENGAGEMENT

With an engagement lasting two years from 2020 to 2022, Enhance VR was 180 Degrees Binghamton’s longest tenured client. A local technology start-up based in downtown Binghamton, Enhance VR focuses on creating virtual reality based solutions to workforce problems. Working with EVR has been an incredibly rewarding experience, giving our consultants constant opportunities to work on exciting, impactful projects. In our last cycle with EVR, consultants focused on developing pricing models, market sizing and enhancing website workflow.

Fall 2019 BingHots engagement

In Fall of 2019, the CEP team, led by Julia Bracco, worked with Binghamton HOTS, a growing downtown restaurant popular among students. Throughout the semester, the team worked closely with HOTS founder David Whalen to create a pitchbook justifying a Binghamton HOTS franchise on campus. The CEP team then scheduled a meeting between BU Dining Services and David, resulting in negotiations for “Hinman HOTS” to open in a newly renovated Hinman dining hall in the fall 2021 semester. More can be read about the results of this meeting in a Pipe Dream article, which can be found here. In addition, the team researched different food delivery contracts and students’ perception of the services, as well as how to implement eco-friendly takeaway boxes. It was a pleasure working with David and we look forward to seeing HOTS growth in the future.

2018-2019 Print Solutions engagement

Through 2018 to 2019, Maya Shah ran an engagement with Binghamton Print Solutions (formerly known as Binghamton Copy Center). The seven-person team is made up of MCG executive board members, interns, and CDP graduates. The goals expressed by Binghamton Print Solutions were to increase profitability, strengthen their customer base, as well as heighten visibility of their services on campus. The CEP team addressed these goals from a number of angles. On the profitability side, the CEP team developed a new pricing strategy while considering demand changes and service offerings. For marketing, the CEP team developed the new brand, Print Solutions, which officially took place over the winter break. Accessibility and awareness were improved through website redesign, an online ordering process, and updated signage. More details can be found in the attached PowerPoint, along with a recommendation letter from Binghamton Print Solutions.
