what were your RESPONSIBILITIES as an intern?

Corporate Strategy sits within Business Intelligence, so my work focused on using fan data to understand purchasing behavior and support future business decisions. I spent nine weeks working extensively in SQL and Tableau on a marketing attribution project that examined which campaigns, channels, and webforms were most effective. A fellow intern and I collaborated with employees across the organization to model first-touch, last-touch, linear, and position-based attribution approaches. We presented our findings to the front office on the final day, helping provide a framework for future marketing decisions - although an NDA keeps me from sharing the really fun details!

What was your favorite/most memorable part of your internship

My favorite part was the people. I was one of 24 interns working across the organization, and not a single day went by without at least 35 laughs, three snacks, and some unforgettable conversations. Walking into an NHL office gave me chills and spending time at UBS Arena made the summer even more surreal. Whether we were talking hockey, our projects, or where to grab lunch in Floral Park, the other interns made every day enjoyable. Pro sports is extremely young and high-energy, I loved every minute of it.

Walk us through a day in the life of your internship?

My day began by leaving my apartment around 7:40 a.m., taking the subway to Penn Station, and hopping on the LIRR to Floral Park. Once I arrived, I wrote the office’s question of the day on the board to get everyone’s brains moving before pulling fan-purchase data and building Tableau visualizations to identify patterns worth exploring. I also met regularly with my manager and supported his work by researching potential corporate sponsorship leads and contacts for the Sales and Service team. Throughout the week, I attended Business Intelligence meetings, one-on-one check-ins, intern roundtables, and sessions with other departments to better understand how every part of an NHL organization works together.
